A re-immersion into anime fandom

After all this time I’ve finally managed to properly immerse myself in anime once more. I have been watching Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, Lovely Complex, Darker than Black, Sailor Moon, Hataraki Man and will watch Mononoke once the subs come out. It’s a great feeling, and I hope I can maintain this feeling that I’ve lost due to my DotA addiction for about a year (which reminds me of momotato). Allow me, however, despite the lateness, to post my first impressions regarding these shows.

  • Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei

  • I was not as impressed with this series’s first episode when compared to how impressed upon I was by Lovely Complex or Darker than Black. I did, however, see the technical merits of this show and I was hoping for something akin to NHK ni Youkoso! (which recently ended) this season. I supposed that this show would do, and so I watched it. It was good, and I hope for more goodness to come from this series.

  • Lovely Complex

  • I should think this as the show of the season for me, mainly because it reminded me of Honey and Clover (although this show was more humorous and less dramatic). I already cried after seeing ep11, so this show is a keeper for me. I don’t want to talk more about this show; most of you know about this already, but in case you haven’t seen it yet, kindly give it a try.

  • Darker than Black

  • I am still to watch the twelve episodes that I have backlogged, but I am impressed at the technical merits of this show as well as the godly characters designs that it possesses. The story in itself is also amusing at the very least; tj_han of RIUVA spoiling me simply entices me more. There will be time for me to watch it, I just don’t know when.

  • Sailor Moon

  • This series remains to be a classic, at least for me. I’ve had friends calling me gay because I am watching this; I’ve had my co-otakus raising their brows because of this show’s lack of merit (supposedly) but I just can’t keep myself away. Their transformation sequences as well as the focus on love, courage, and friendship still makes this show relevant (at least to me πŸ˜‰ ).

Darker than Black is great on many levels, but there have been people who don’t enjoy it as much as the rest of us. I’m not sure what floats your boat, but if you’re one of those people who thinks a clear over-arching plot is a necessity then you might not like it that much.

Myself, I enjoy its episodic approach and rank it as the best anime of spring 2007.

I don’t mind anything episodic as long as it’s good for me. I loved Cowboy Bebop despite that nature of its.

Welcome back, Michael! (My fellow namesake.) I’m really enjoying Darker than Black and Sayonara Zetsubo Sensei myself, especially the latter. I kinda dropped off on Lovely Complex lately, though. It actually reminds me more of Marmalade Boy than Honey and Clover.

I’ve begun to realize that a great deal of the strength of H&C was contained in the monologues and voice overs.

Hey, great picks. I had very similar feelings about Sayonara Zetsubo Sensei, and 2nd episode totally had me in gear. Glad you’ve found the good vibes again. ^^

Good to see you back, but, but… SailorMoon!? πŸ˜‰
    Just kidding. πŸ™‚
Although I have never watched more than a dozen of episodes from the anime, I did watch the drama. So I won’t call you gay πŸ˜›

I have yet to try Lovely Complex, but I hope to soon fill that gap. On the other hand, I have dropped Darker Than Black long ago. It’s not so much the episodic approach (I too love Cowboy Bebop) but rather the utter lack of empathy with the characters: I just don’t care about them.
As for Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, well judging from the 1st episode, it looked to me like they tried way too hard to be funny. We’ll see how it goes in the next episodes, but I don’t have much hope.

    Haha. Despair, you mean? =p
