A mimetic dissection: Ghost Slide and the power of loneliness

My classes have finally ended: my last examinations were yesterday; by virtue of this, I have become free to do anything I want once again. Since my schedule is loose right now, I have decided to write once more, and I hope also more consistently.

In the online world, memes have grown in popularity among people who share something fundamental. Within a culture, memes act like viruses. This is not to say that they are deadly, but they do spread rapidly and become easily shared by this culture. The meme I shall try to dissect in this post is a meme that is (or was) shared by people who are fond of anime culture. The people who birthed this meme, however, are not necessarily the only people who appreciate anime, but they are a significant chunk.

‘Ghost Slide’ as a meme was born sometime after Valentine’s Day. As everyone knows, Valentine’s Day is a day for couples to enjoy their partnership; it is also a day where couples are made (or sadly, broken). However, for those without partners (I included), the day is known as Singles’ Awareness Day (distilled into the acronym ‘SAD’). Media has observed (and correctly so, I think) that most avid fans of anime are without partners. Viewing anime has made their dream goals with regard to their significant other much loftier: anime, after all, presents perfection in their men and women. It is only in anime where one can see a beautiful, powerful, intelligent, subservient and kind woman in Belldandy. There are much more examples, but I think it is the painting of perfection in these characters that delude quite a few into thinking it possible to see such partners in their real lives. Because this is impossible, or because imperfection pervades every single real human being, most anime fans are dejected by their failure to see this perfection in real life. In addition, their search for the perfect woman, or yamato nadeshiko in anime takes away from their time spent in reality. This makes finding a suitable partner for quite a few of these fans difficult: how can one find something if one is not even looking for it?


I hope, for the sake of everyone, that no one is as lonely as this.

These dejected and lonely (or ‘ronery,’ a Japanese bastardization of the word) fans lurk on imageboards such as 4chan’s /a/. I do admit that I visit the board at times, although I frequent the Health and Fitness board a lot more often. When I visited /a/, however, quite a few people were talking about the supposed underrated anime that was ‘Ghost Slide’. Being ignorant of the board’s machinations, I searched ANN and AniDB for information regarding this ‘relatively unknown’ series. There was no information whatsoever in either of the two databases: I did more research regarding this, and discovered here that it was a sad plot by people who wanted to drag people into their misery, or at least make fun of people other themselves, by collaborating (unknowingly) with one another.

Before I can explicate further on the matter, I must first also introduce another meme among anime fans (and this one infinitely more popular, I should think): this is the term ‘weeaboo,’ which means someone excessively interested in Japanese culture. The term is actually more of self-deprecating humor than a total insult, because people who do use these terms are often also appreciative of Japanese culture.

The initial ‘Ghost Slide’ picture was drawn as an ideogram: it implied the joke ‘Whee-boo,’ which translated to ‘weeaboo.’ A ghost was drawn on a slide with a big grin on its countenance, thus representing the ‘boo,’ while it sliding represented the ‘whee.’ It was a bad, and quite unfunny illustration; someone came up with the idea of inserting the ‘Ghost Slide’ caption on the picture: thence, the picture developed into the ‘Ghost Slide’ meme known today. (See picture above for a clearer description.) Some people made a story about it; some people went to the extent of creating a false sub group, ‘Slide-Subs,’ yet posted the Sex Demon Queen (the link is safe for work) hentai series. The meme has lost popularity over time, but it is still known by almost everyone who was part of or victimized by the hoax.

In conclusion, the adage ‘misery loves company,’ applies very aptly and loneliness is a powerful driving force (in the creation of memes, or otherwise). Solitude is something that no one wants to deal with yet everyone must face at certain times of their lives.

    Indeed. The adage is apt to those who don’t have a significant other in real life and must “somehow” obtain their desire to have one in a medium such as anime.

    Well, this is certainly interesting.

    Now, I expect the majority (if not the entirety) of 4chan to be single-minded singles. Scared or just plain lazy enough to get a GF of their own, if you will.

    And what better way to get it all, than to make up a joke that’s aimed at you and your brethren. At least the pain of SO RONERYness isn’t that bad after that.

    Note: You should probably dissect MOAR memes. Just be careful not to get the attention of the hardcore 4channers (and/or subsequently, trolls). o_O

    4chan != 2chan, but I’m not much of a bbs person these days.

    So wow that was an interesting read. These particular memes are new to me. Solitude and searching, how people become lonely is a little more difficult to see than the result of it. True, it’s easy to dismiss real people for lack of perfection, but eventually one drawns upon the line of the NEET anti-social. Perhaps the majority of people enjoying this media feel slightly outcast and revert to being anti-social as a means of protection; difficult to generalize because I’m sure this is high in my country, but I don’t know about other places.

    Whatever the case, everyone must face themselves at some point, and I could only guess that those in misery haven’t reached that moment. Note: misery != loneliness, as I’m probably lonely most of the time, but quite content, though being around people is so exciting. Even if we don’t connect… people are valid persons too.

    Oh there was this catchy some with those lyrics “misery loves company”, by Brian Scary, fun stuff. back to paper writing… ^^ enjoy the freedom!

    Personally, I don’t feel being outcast socially. I can properly function and can initiate conversations, even with beautiful women, although I would be a little tense. However, I do exhibit some schizoid traits: I am introverted and do prefer to be alone a lot of the time. I guess it’s a defense mechanism against becoming hurt, but I have faced myself and realized it is my way of life.

    Yeah, it seems that you’re introverted.

    I must admit that my perception of 4chan users is depressingly low. They seem to engage more in petty insults and attempts to increase their self-esteem through the demise of others. The phrase that “loneliness enjoys company” definitely seems to have some truth in it. I must say that it is particularly interesting to see how the degree of deceit is with the attempt to justify their self-worth online.

    I am very sure that I have been overly critical and stereotypical of the common user of a 4chaner, but it just does not give me the vibes of being any place of a credible person. They often just seems to be trolls that enjoy making fun of others in order to have great delight.

    The Internet has often become a strong debating field between who is the cause of which. Is it because people are generally outcasts in real life the reason for using the Internet more frequently? Is it the usage of the Internet that results in social deviance? Research has definitely told us that there is a very significant relationship between the two but I have not known of any established studies that have clearly found the causality of the two.

    In my opinion, it is perhaps a defense mechanism and a source of escapism from reality. Humans always try to find a reason to live for, no matter how pathetic it is. As long as it brings them joy, it does not really matter. It might be the same scenario for all these generations of memes and the attempt to alleviate loneliness. It’s their attempt to prove their existence is true and alive.

    O_O introverted, this is true. I understand that feeling, or non-feeling, though I don’t feel outcast, but I think a good majority here in the USA do (or those that embark on the otaku path).

    Here’s one thing I’ve learned about being alone: You are strong if you can be happy alone, and those moments of company become much more sincere in the end.

    Whenever one uses 4chan one relieves himself partly of some shame and guilt. It has been discussed and dissected in sociology that anonymity diffuses these feelings because there is little chance of being identified. Not everyone in 4chan, and not all boards of 4chan, however, exhibit such selfish and depraved actions.

    As I’ve said, I have lurked and replied as well as asked questions in the Health and Fitness board. While most people have been helpful, there were also trolls present. There are trolls present everywhere. Both of us know at least one. I have lost weight and gained some muscle, although I do still have to fix my metabolism and persist in my exercises.

    I’ve no such illusions. It’s not that I’ve been avoiding the Internet (I’d be lying if I was), but I do believe if there was something to be achieved, it has to be in real life. Many people, however, are trapped within the online world of anonymity.

    As for causality regarding the interlocking of Internet and social deviance, we can safely say that they are highly interrelated with one another. As sad as it is, some people want to find something that they excel at. I guess this is what a lot of people over at 4chan aspire.

    The ontological question is a question that is never easily answered; however, it is a question every human being faces every day of his entire life.

    I would like to point out something here. A quote from Wikipedia’s article on loneliness:

    “Loneliness is not the same as being alone. Everyone has times when he or she is alone through circumstances or choice. Being alone can be experienced as positive, pleasurable, and emotionally refreshing if it is under the individual’s control. Solitude is the state of being alone and secluded from other people, and often implies having made a conscious choice to be alone. Loneliness is therefore unwilling solitude.”

    The difference between loneliness and solitude is like the one between introversion and shyness. A shy person avoids social contact out of fear, an introvert out of personal preference. Such is the case with me and I’m certainly not just speaking for myself. I have not dated or been in a relationship even once. It’s been many years since I have even felt attraction towards a person and I’m not feeling miserable, hollow or worthless – quite on the contrary. I’m happy to be single and be able to contribute my money and time just the way I want. I do not feel the need to share moments or start a family. However this is of course hard to understand to people who do not think this way. Again I would like to use introversion as an example. An introvert can easily understand an extrovert, but an extrovert finds it very, very hard to understand an introvert.

    Relationships make the life dynamic, that’s true. But nowadays there are a lot of other things that can do the trick. Going for a relationship is now just one of the options.

    I won’t wage war with the difference in your usage and in mine of the word ‘solitude.’ I would, however, agree with your point regarding the difference of introversion and shyness. I, for one, am quite an introvert, and while I am quite willing to have relationships and have a significant partner sooner or later, I am not avoiding social contact out of fear. I have also not dated or been in a relationship even once, but I’m not feeling miserable, lonely, or worthless.

    I’m content being single. Although I’d like a taste of partnership sooner or later, yes, I do not feel any need to start a family. I’d much prefer friendship, although I’m afraid what will happen to me in my old age. I also would agree, however, regarding your point about introverts and extroverts. It is quite easy to understand, from our point of view, extroverts; but they have difficulty placing themselves in our shoes.

    I say, yes, there are a lot of alternatives. My movies, novels, and anime have kept me in great company for my 20 years in this world. πŸ˜€

    Definitely an interesting post. Glad to hear that you got finished with classes and we can get some more of your commentary. I always look forward to it.

    Although I’m still not convinced that people see the “perfect” woman in anime. Arguably there are a lot of women in anime that are less than perfect. And even ones who would be less than desirable if we met in real life.

    But I do think that solitude (whether by choice or by force) makes one develop solitary hobbies. And once you develop solitary hobbies, you can’t really back away from them.

    Hey there,
    I’ve got two questions I would like to hear answered from some pretty dedicated anime fans.

    1) Does anime function as an escapism mechanism, or is it a means through which reality is uncovered? To clarify, is it a 20-21st century extension of the 19th century Romantic movement, or is it an extension of modern/existential thought? I realize that there may be exceptions, and please if there are could you direct me to them?

    2)To elaborate on question one, perfection in anime is achieved through…?

    I realize that these are exceptionally vague questions but they have always bothered me. It’s almost as if the anime fans I talk to forget that their favorite characters are representations of emotions rather than embodiments.

It’s rather ironic–I myself have been pondering this whole outcast vs. solace vs. perfections paradigm. I’m rather new to anime and manga myself, but I’d be hard put to say it didn’t fill a function in my life that I had previously turned to other avenues for. Kudos on your explication!

    I can definitely identify with this.
    It just seems like nobody I know is into anime or manga. My friends think that I am weird for sleeping in a One Piece tee-shirt and owning a hat with the Fruit Basket characters on it. The only people I know who are like me are in anime chat rooms, and it’s hard to make friends with them. I feel like I am a pink hippo in the middle of a bunch of elephants.
